Aku ari ni tamau wat entry personal.because today is my review of Dreamgirls. Yes, caught it, no not on ciplak punya DVD but on downloaded format. Aku wat review skang because tomorrow, ada gala premiere for the event, aku nak pastikan aku focus on our local stars cause I already know every inch of the Dreamgirls movie. If that isn't enough, aku siap da tengok the original Broadway staged version thanks to the beauty of technology. Yer...pada sapa yang tatau, it';s not Beyonce ok who made Dreamgirls big. Dreamgirls was already a big musical prior to it making film. Now on to one of the most anticipated movies of the year (for me - apart from The Simpsons Movie and Transformers The Movie amongst others)
Synopsis The story begins with Curtis Taylor Jr (Jamie Foxx) who is a car salesman with a big dream to make it in the music business with his tadical ideas in 1960s Detroit where being black equalled your song not being played on the radio. He comes across The Dreamettes, comprising of Deena Jones (Beyonce Knowles), Lorrel Robinson (Anika Noni Rose) and lead singer Effie White (Jennifer Hudson) with cheap wigs (siap pakai terbalik ok, that's creativitiy for you) and homemade outfits - that still look better than the outfits you see on Akademi Fantasia, with original songs an choreography courtesy of C.C., Effie's brother (Keith Robinson). They get their first real break backing up James 'Thunder' Early (Eddie Murphy), before Curtis introduces the trio for their own spot, tapi kali ni nak jual rupa Deena, pushing Effie to the back The rest is drama and more than enough songs for me to holler to (kesian sapa yang akan dok sebelah aku nak dengau sora katak aku melalak skali pada lagu lagu)
Facts *It took 25 years for Dreamgirls to be made into a movie. *The script for Dreamgirls began with Big Dreams. The musical then was written by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger and made public theatre. *On Dec 20 1981, Dreamgirls began its run at the Imperial Theatre with a cast that included Jennifer Holliday. *In 1982, Dreamgirls received 13 Tony Award nominations (anugerah seni pentas) and won six. *The success of Dreamgirls also saw the work of David Foster, who was involved in the original caat album of the musical. *The show has been performed in many countries, which include Malaysia sometime in the 80s, anyone remember that? *The songs And I Am Telling You and I Am Changing placed Jennifer Holliday among the legendary divas and made them the biggest musical anthems. And I Am Telling You is considered the BEST tune from musicals and is my personal drama tune. The new version has Beyonce to thank for in making One Night Only a crossover pop hit. *Jennifer Hudson was originally was one of the favourites of the American Idol where she was anticipated to join Latoya London and Fantasia Barrino in the top three for the battle of divas before two of them were eliminated before Fantasia won. *Dreamgirls received eight 2007 Academy Award nominations, the most of any film for the year, but it didn't get one for Best Picture, Best Director, or any of the lead acting categories. The film's nominations include Best Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson), Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Art Direction, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, and three nominations for Best Song (Listen, Love You I Do, and Patience). Dreamgirls is the first live-action film to receive three nominations for Best Song with only Disney animated features Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Lion King (1994) having achieved that. In 2007 Golden Globe Awards, Dreamgirls was nominated in five categories: Best Picture - Comedy or Musical, Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Beyoncé Knowles), Best Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson), and Best Original Song (Listen). The film won the awards for Best Picture - Comedy or Musical, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. The film also garnered Screen Actors Guild Awards for Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson) and Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy), as well as a nomination for its ensemble cast. The film was also nominated by the Producers Guild of America for Best Picture and the Directors Guild of America for Bill Condon's directing. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts gave the film nominations for Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson) and Music (Henry Krieger). Dreamgirls was nominated for eleven 2007 International Press Academy Satellite Awards, and won four, Best Picture - Comedy or Musical, Best Director (Bill Condon) (tied with Clint Eastwood for Flags of Our Fathers), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Jennifer Hudson), and Best Sound (Mixing & Editing). Dreamgirls also received a record eleven Black Reel Award nominations, among them Best Film, Best Actor (Jamie Foxx), Best Actress (Beyoncé Knowles), Best Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy), and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson). In addition, Dreamgirls received eight NAACP Image Awards nominations, including Best Picture, and was named as one of the American Film Institute's top ten films of 2006.
What did I think of it? Love it love it love it love it love it!!!!!!! I'm a freak when it comes to musicals (aku pegi panggung bayar sendiri ok nak tengok The Producers FOUR times - keep it happy, keep it snappy...) And Dreamgirls is definitely a showcase of amazing acting. The real star of the movie bukan Beyonce ok, but Jennifer Hudson. She carries off where the other Jennifer (Holliday) left off with her big voice. Vocally, Hudson takde ler standard Hollliday but I think she fared a lot better in the acting department. Beyonce is just so-so and despite her starring role, I think the folks behind it letak nama Beyonce besau besau because in an ironic move, like the storyline, meka nak jual rupa dan nama Beyonce. Still...it's all fabulous. Listen to the songs before ko pegi tengok (if you haven't heard the songs, so you can sing along, like what I did when The Bodyguard made the screens here - watched that SIX times in the cinema). Anyway...definitely worth a watch.... After all...it is one of the best movies of the year. And no, no poster colored painted faces in green biting of toes for this one...
Now I've gotten that out of the way, tomorrow aku akan posting pics from the event sebab the gala premiere malam esok if I am not mistaken is organised by Berita Harian with all the biggest stars in the country attending the event. The theme, aku dengar for the event is Motown, so aku nak gak tengok how many of our local artises understand what Motown means. Nanti aku post pics tomorrow... Meanwhile, I'll leave you guys with clips from the original Dreamgirls, the first taken from the 1982 Tonys and the second a clip from the movie. So you guys can compare...and then enjoy the movie trailer, and erm...a little bonus. Enjoy....and be posting soon...

First of all, to the important stuff. I know ramai yang tertanya pasal pic Siti kat Grammys kan? I got the email from Star World (terima kasih teramat Nini, Naomi and the Star World and the Channel [V] family) semalam, tapi pikir nak simpan posting tuk ari ni je. Yerlah kan...paper kena print dulu baru leh kuarkan...kalau tak, namanya conflict of interest....yes, some of us have something called ethics. Anyways, aku da agak most papers would not run all the pictures given, most run dua je tak silap aku....I got about five. So ni nak kongsi pics tuh. Enjoy!!!
Gambar ni semua aku da kecikkan, but didn't make to make them too small sebab kang semua bising lak kan kata tak nampak sebab pics cinonet sangat. So korang kena sabar jer la loading time camtuh because if you use a dial-up lama sikit ler nak bukak pics.....silap silap tak muncui kena refresh terus. Honestly the only thing I like about these pictures is Datuk Bernard Chandran's dress. I think it makes Siti look old and frumpy. Dalam nak nampakkan Siti pinggang kicik, he went and made her whole upper body look extremely bulky! Material dia lak mula mula aku nampak ok sebab it does look like tweed, tapi bila on close up, lor, those miniscule sequins lak. Keji tau...dah menjadi identiti negara kita ke ngan kewajipan labuci kena ada kat baju artis kita ni. I mean...we surely can do better than that kan? At the end of the day, creations like this prove yang nama cam Bernard Chandran ni setakat makan nama je cause hasil tak seberapa. Anyways, moving on...nak ucap Happy Valentine's Day to all...my own Valentine ni jauh sangat...but takpe...it's the thought that counts. To my new found sweetheart...here's hoping things will be as wonderful tomorrow as they were yesterday and as they are today. Eh...lupa lak nak wish pada Siti dan Datuk K yang spending their Valentine's kat LA and then cuti seminggu to a secret location. Siti...jangan lupa bak ole ole balik yang dijanjikan!!! Eh..nak sambung keja sat.
PS - Tolong kreditkan Star World dan Channel [V] untuk gambar ni kalao nak tempek memana ok.
Yer...saksikan la internet cafe bergerak ini, Jangan tatau..citer nya aku sebenarnya tengah siap keja. Masa tu tengah online, so sambil tuh parking ler nick online. Si Boy Kerol lak pot pet ngan aku. Aku pun haven't spent time ngan dia da...dulu penah rapat giler ngan dia. And then small misunderstanding (and I mean small and petty, not some backstabbing bullshit, or selfish act of bitchiness like some cases I've encountered), nyebabkan kami lama tak bertegur. Tapi kami tak pun berperang. Anyways kebelakangan ni kami selalu terserempak....so kebetulan aku parking online tu, si Boy ajak ler jumpa. Dia mai to my office in Bangsar, and then masa tu sebab keja pun da complete dan send in da, kami gerak ke KLCC. Sambil melantak kat Dome, memasing bukak laptop. In about an hour, si Ted lak join. Penoh satu meja. Makan minom semua letak lak kat bench. Keji kan... Makan minum second importance katanya... Anyway masa tu memang lantak ler orang cakap apa...Internet cafe bergerak pun jadilah. Siap webcam tuh...aku ngan boy sempat videoconferencing sat (matilah berangan...tapi janji ada). From there, we gerak ke izzi, which was in Bukit Bintang, and then sambung kat gerai kak Ara. Saja je..seronok lak...kalau biasa technology meminggirkan kami dari what happens in real life, this was one example where technology brought us all together. Sapa nak join lain kali...kita leh wat gathering...heh! Ok...nak sambung bab entry....will post some nice pics tomorrow...nak tau pasal apa? Korang mesti suka punya lah...aku esok ada banyak sikit keja nak abihkan, so I'll post early. Tunggu!!!
Ari ni banyak kerja, as Monday always is. Depresssing really sebab hati nak cuti sangat ni ngan Chinese New Year just around the corner. In fact, I think I deserve at least a two week long break pasnih...which I probably will take sebab leave aku banyak agik. But today ada program sikit. Pas abih keja kena lak gegas ke Astro. Sebab ada rakaman Macam Macam Aznil yang akankeluar musim baru kat Astro Prima (hah...da pindah rumah....used to be Astro Ria tapi skang Astro Prima sebab meka konon nak rebranding channel) Anyways got there in the rain at the same time as Rudy from Harian Metro. Meanwhile, si Syazwan (bila ko nak ada blog....) dan Marliah from Kosmo! da ada, as well as Farihad dan si Zul Husni from Berita Harian pun da sampai. Al-kisahnya, Aznil veing the sweet thing that he is, wat rakaman special episode bersama media. So apa artis kena dera, wartawan pun kena. Had a light dinner kat cafeteria before proceeded to the studio. Cabut undi, tengok tengok si Zul dan Syazwan kena the wheel of racun gituh. Aku dan Farihad kena segmen kedua for acara ikut silat (don't ask..kena tengok kot baru paham...keji sangat aku ni) And then last but not least si Marliah dan Rudy (sesuaiii!!) kena erm...tiru gaya ballerina. Memang pecah perot la. It was a laugh fest the whole night. Kak Aina, producer Macam Macam Aznil (love you kak Aina!) dan Norizan (abih ko anak ko ikut aku kang main tindik tindik dan tattoo) pun provided the light hearted entertainment ngan tompang gosip semalaman. Tapi ni ada soalan trivia sikit. On the left is Marliah from Kosmo! Teka la rupa dia cam siapa? Ni masa we were all changing (not me la meka je) tuk program Aznil dalam werdrobe area (kenapa I sense evil giruh). Yang pentingnya this has been marliah's look of late sejak dia potong rambut dia...kalao dulu panjang.... We noticed this some time back but cuma now je aku kesempatan nak amik pic (tu pun kena marah ngan dia satu round dulu sebab tau je aku nak carut dia kat blog). Yeap...hasilnya, kalao korang penah tengok kartun Scooby Doo, you'd recognise Marliah as... Velma Dinkley! Aduh...anyway...finished the programme jer, we headed back to the cafeteria for another drink, and this time, with Aznil, join for one more round of gossip. Kesian tau, sepanjang rakaman Macam Macam Aznil, takde sora lak mamat tuh. Back to back siot berapa belas episod....mana tak ilang nya suara. Tapi time da abih, sorsa come back lak...sentap!!! Tapi my salute ler to Aznil...you are definitely one of the most hardest working individuals in TV and no matter what anyone says, you deserve a round of appplause. Thanks for having us on your show. Anyway....abih je, aku decide nak rush balik...apa agik kalau bukan tuk sambung nak download...then need rest. Ujan ni...mmm..best...zzzZZZ
Music is beautiful, no matter what language it is in. It transcends the boundaries of race, religion, and even that of a geographical nature. Here's my list of songs from Indonesian pop and rock acts that are on my playlist, some of which are my all time favorites. Some old, some new and some just bloody timeless. Enjoy the sounds and listen beyond the music and the words - and instead tune into the emotions of each tune. No matter what genre they may be.
Say NO! to the hateful and malicious nature of some who choose to close our local music market for fear of competition simply because they are unable to compete, and unwilling to even try.
Support Malaysian music. Don't kill it by being ignorant. Music is ever evolving, and our local sound is slowing being rendered irrelevant. This is my protest against those who choose to be anti-Indonesian music, simply because SOME of our local talents and recording outfits are too lazy to innovate and create. This is the sound of Indonesia today. Are we up for the challenge to evolve and produce better music in healthy competition?
WHAT I'M ON
KLUBBKIDD
So...just what do you want to know about me?
I'm simple, and yet complicated.
It's as simple as that...but then again, perhaps not.
My life is kinda like my job, an oxymoron. Try this one out for size...'ethical journalist'. See, told you so.
Anyway, here's a brief (yeah right!) intro to my life.
I'm a proud Malaysian (and I mean literally!), of Chinese descent. I'm Christian (Roman Catholic!).
I'm kinda whacked. I believe in piercings, dyed hair, black nails, silver studs. leather and spiked accessories and oh... tattoos...body art is just that...art. Apart from anything else that will make me worth staring at.
Right now, I have a total of seven piercings (three on lobes - two left one right, left ear cartilage, nose, lower lip and tongue) with three taken out on brow (one ripped) as well as three tattoos with more to come.
Forget the tough exterior, cause I believe in hugging my parents, crying when I feel like it, require tender moments with my significant other, and I appreciate my friends. As Kim from America's Next Top Model said it best. "What's my secret? I may look tough on the outside, but really, I scream like a girl!"
Fictional?
I 32 as of last July 17, and it's past the mid life crisis come early for me as I struggled to deal with the coming of age thing. I am working as a freelance senior entertainment journalist, a job which I have been at ever since I decided to quit college, two subjects short of graduating. I was taking my Diploma In Sound and Audio Engineering. Until recently that is.
Now I do a lot of freelance overall talent consultancy which includes image and communication. I am also in the process of starting my own company klubbkidd Sdn Bhd, which is producing its first TV show from a format that I have created myself. The show will most likely be on air sometime end 2008.
I have donelive sound production for some concerts and shows and a little bit of studio work in hopes of becoming a sound engineer with what I've studies, when I turned back to my first love, writing.
Was doing general news, specialized awhile in politics, did a little features, crime, business and sports and dabbled in related journalism fields before finally settling into my current position, thankfully, entertainment, the perks of which is doing what I've always loved (writing and indulging in music) and also backstage passes to meet my favorite acts. It's eleven years now, and I'm still golding it there.
Looking back - whatever's gone on in my life - it's not too hard to be positive and look ahead, with more pleasant of the memories to make the journey a little easier.
And these very memories which I cherish so, are the reasons behind why I started blogging.
The friendships and variety of relationships I've been through, allow me to highlight the mistakes I've made and how not to repeat them, not to compromise my principles too much for love, and also a balance in sacrificing my ego, and how I must learn to be stronger in the face of adversity.
So I've never figured myself to be a real hoot.I pace on day by day, occasionally skipping, sometimes with just a little jaunty bounce. More often than not, I go smack! either on my rear end (which needs more meat) or flat on my face.Life treats me well, I suppose, so I shouldn't gripe. I am stll my own hero - that's positivity through self-affirmation for you.
